BYD has donated RMB 10 million ($1.4 million) to the earthquake relief efforts in Gansu, northwest China, where more than 100 people have been killed in an earthquake that struck late yesterday night.
The BYD Charity Foundation has donated RMB 10 million to the earthquake-stricken Gansu province to help with emergency relief, people's livelihood assistance, rescue team support and post-disaster reconstruction in the affected areas, the company announced today.
BYD will continue to monitor the progress of post-disaster relief and fully support the local relief work, the company said.
At 23:59 on December 18, Gansu was hit by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter depth of 10 kilometers, according to the official today.
As of 8 am on December 19, a total of 32 aftershocks were recorded, with the largest aftershock measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale.
The disaster has killed 105 people, injured 186, damaged 4,782 houses, and damaged infrastructure such as water, electricity, transportation and communications, according to Xinhua.

BYD is the first car company to announce a donation to help with earthquake relief in Gansu. Earlier today, tech companies including and Alibaba announced similar moves.
Gansu is an inland province in China with a less developed economy than China's eastern and southern provinces.
In 2022, Gansu's GDP was RMB 1.12 trillion, lower than Shanghai's RMB 4.47 trillion, according to statistical authorities.
