According to the financial news app Zhitong Finance, Waymo, the self-driving car company under Google's parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.US), announced on Tuesday that its Waymo One service is now providing 150,000 paid trips per week, with a total self-driving mileage exceeding 1 million miles.
Waymo stated: "The future is here, (the business) is constantly evolving, and passengers can be safely taken to their destinations every day."
It is understood that as of August this year, Waymo confirmed that it was already providing over 100,000 trips per week. At that time, Chief Product Officer Saswat Panigrahi stated that Waymo achieved this milestone by intentionally scaling up, optimizing costs, and providing a strong consumer experience. Panigrahi emphasized that Waymo's approach of designing hardware and software from scratch was crucial to its early success, and with the launch of the sixth generation hardware, this approach will continue to be successful.
In October this year, there were other major events in the self-driving taxi industry. Tesla (TSLA.US) held the highly anticipated Robotaxi event, while the Chinese self-driving car newcomer Pony.ai (PONY.US) submitted an IPO application to Nasdaq. Various participants of different scales are involved in the competition to develop and deploy self-driving taxis, including Tesla, Waymo, Amazon's Zoox, May Mobility, Baidu's Apollo, General Motors' Cruise, WeRide, AutoX, Aurora Innovation (AUR.US), Aptiv (APTV.US), and Hyundai's joint venture company Motional
